Syrian Refugee Family Travel Loan Fundraiser

Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada

This campaign is raising money for a Syrian family that has been in Fredericton since January, 2017. The parents have six children, ranging in age from three to fourteen. They love Fredericton and plan to stay.

As refugees, the family has permanent residency and some government support. However, the government’s support for travel costs ended in 2016, so any refugees arriving in 2017 have to repay their travel expenses to the government. (They were ready and willing to come in 2016 but the government delayed their arrival.) For this family, the amount of that loan is $9072. The parents are focusing on learning English and are not yet working. The travel loan is therefore virtually impossible for them to pay back without our help. Every month they get a bill from the government and interest is accruing.

I’m hoping we can raise $10,000 to pay off this family’s travel loan and allow them to start their life in Canada without this debt. Any amount is very much appreciated!

**Note that the family wishes to remain anonymous. If you have any questions or concerns about the legitimacy of this fundraiser, please contact the organizer, Hilary Young ([email protected]).**
